That’s right, it is that time of year again: time for loving, giving, and being totally captivated by that Christmas spirit. It is a time to spend with family, to curl up on the couch with a blanket and a warm cup of tea. But for this hombre, it is the time to be pitted against the brutal elements of winter. For swimming, cycling, and running become such a chore when the season changes. None more so than cycling– one can find an indoor pools, and running in bad weather is bearable– and if it gets THAT bad a runner can always give in to the sin that is the treadmill. I often talk about what great joy is to be found out on bike rides, but this time of year, it is utterly grueling. Whatever windchill factor exist is easily amplified to a much great degree (of coldness) when I’m churning around at 20 mph. And in the case of those brutal head winds… sometimes I feel like I’m going so slow I might just topple over.
The head wind was so bad today– what took me 1 hour riding into the wind on the way out– only took my 30 minutes riding with the wind at my back on the return trip. That’s just the wind factor! Ah! Chapped lips, numb fingers and toes, and a red nose…. and the wind hissing in my ears so loud I can barely hear myself think. Summer… come back… I, my tan, and my sanity miss you.
